CDC Suspended Midge
Tied by Bill Schudlich
  • Hook: Dai Riki #135 or TMC #2487 size 18 - 22
  • Thorax: Gray dubbing
  • Body: Stripped peacock herl (makes a nice segmented body)
  • Wing: White or Natural CDC barbules
  • Tying Instructions
Soak stripped peacock in warm water to soften. Wrap thread back to bend of hook. Tie in herl by the tip. Wrap thread forward to about ¸ to 2/3 the distance to the eye. Wrap herl forward and tie off. Strip several CDC barbules off a medium sized feather. Stack these by hand so that the butts are lined up. Tie in along the hook shank at about the mid point of the barbules, with the tips pointing forward. Take the butt part of the barbules, pull forward and wrap over them, effectively doubling the size of the forward pointing "wing." Add a small amount of gray dubbing to form the head or thorax of the fly. Lift the CDC barbules up, and tie the thread off underneath the CDC with a series of half hitches. Clip CDC barbules to the desired length. I also coat the herl body with fleximent to add strength.

    Enjoy!
    Fishing Tips
First off, let me say that the thinking behind this fly is more important than the specific pattern itself. This is the type of pattern that lends itself to variations. What I like to use this type of fly for is when those pesky trout are taking something right at the surface, but that your waning eyesight cannot see. I tie this with different color and size combinations to match the local midge population. The CDC post is above the surface, but the rest of the fly is submerged.
