Spent-Wing Caddis
Tied by Bob Kammer
  • Wing Case: CDC Feather
  • Wing: Deer hair, straight and slender, tied spent
  • Hook: Dry fly of choice, 14
  • Body: Golden Olive or darker
  • Tail: None
  • Tying Instructions
Wind on some thread to about mid hook then back towards eye. Prepare deer hair for a wing, a strong matchstick size, remove guard hair, even it up. Tie in the clump (tips facing back), secure it good (about 4+ turns in front and a couple turns under the clump), stand it up, divide it, and lay it down. Use a figure 8 and force the wings with your fingers. The quality of deer hair really counts here, too stiff and it won't lay down, too thick and it will spin out of control. I think I used coastal deer hair and it was even to start with. Elk is a bit too stiff but it's a possibility, I wish it worked better for me. Make sure the wing is secure, it may spin a bit. Dub from the bend (tapered) to the back of the wing. Tie in the cdc, the tip will extend off the back a bit. Figure 8 dub around the wing (this gives final form to the wings) and take a few dubbing wraps in front of the wings. Pull the cdc over the wing forming a case and whip finish.

This is an interesting fly, and I'm still learning to tie it. I used most of my deer hair and only found one sample that felt right. It was dyed gray and had black tips. Tying the wings with the tips over the eye left a bulky back and not enought substance for the case. This fly works well.
