One of my old standbys...this pattern catches trout here in New England throughout the season.
After attaching the tying thread, wrap back to the hook bend and tie in the tip of an appropriately sized grizzly hackle. Apply dubbing to the thread and wrap forward to the wing position. Palmer the grizzly hackle to the tie off position and secure and trim excess. Trim the hackle flat on the top of the hook and tie on a slip of turkey wing that has been prepared as noted below. Trim the rear portion to extend just slightly beyond the hook bend. Tie in a brown dry fly hackle by the stem and wrap the hackle as you would for any standard dry fly. Trim the excess and whip finish.
Preparing the turkey feather: I usually prepare an entire turkey wing feather, thus saving valuable tying time. Originally, I would spray the whole feather, on both sides, with a product designed for photographers to create a matte photo finish. This techinique has always worked well, but recently I have experimented with a new product. Softex is a clear, flexible and durable coating. Using a dubbing needle, evenly coat the feather on both sides. This results in a very durable wing material, although it does add a bit more weight and requires a heaver hand when tying onto the hook. Be careful not to break your thread.
