| Tying Instructions |
Slide a bead onto your hook, you may have to crimp the barb, depending on the hook. Tie in two brown stripped goose pieces, split for the tail (split, meaning at an angle to one another). Next, tie in a length of gold tinsel, I like to use a fairly long piece as it makes it easier to work with when wrapping it. Now tie in 4-6 pieces of peacock. Spiral the herl around the thread to make a 'rope' of herl. Carefully wrap the rope forward on the hook. Tie off the herl and tie off just behind the head. Now spiral the gold tinsel forward for the ribbing on the body. Tie in the tip of a brown wet fly hackle and make one full spiral of the hackle. Tie it off and trim the excess tip and fibers on the top side of the fly. Next take 2 pieces of white stripped goose and tie them in just behind the bead for the wings, split these just as you did the tail. Whip finish and cement (if desired).
I have fished this fly extensively on the South Fork of the Snake, Henry's Fork, Madison and Ruby rivers and have caught good numbers of fish each time. It works well as a trailer behind either an elk hair caddis or a stone fly. Good luck. If you have any questions send me an e-mail. |
