Beetle Bug
Tied by Linda Foote
  • Hook: Any nymph or scud hook #20-14
  • Thread: Black or Olive 8/0
  • Head: Metallic glass bead
  • Underbody: Olive Antron Dubbing
  • Shell Back: Peacock Angel Hair (Angler's Choice)
  • Tail: Peacock Angel Hair (Angler's Coice)
  • Tying Instructions
De-barb the hook. Slide the glass bead onto the hook, all the way up to the hook eye. Wrap the hook with a good thread base to the hook bend, starting behind the bead. To create the tail and shell back, cut off a clump of angel hair about diameter of a toothpick. Tie in the angel hair at the hook bend. The tail should be equal to or less than the length of the hook shank. Wrap the thread forward a few wraps, securing the angel hair, then pull the excess angel hair back toward the tail. Wrap the thread back to the hook bend. This excess will be pulled forward later, to create the shell back. Dub the body, making it a little larger through the mid section. Do not dub tight up against the bead. Bring the excess angel hair forward, and tie off behind the bead. Whip finish.
    Fishing Tips
For stillwaters, try a variety of retrieves: short and fast, long and slow, or a mixture of the two.
    For rivers, dead drift.
