| Tying Instructions |
| The recipe: Slide on beadhead, place hook in vise etc.
Strip the longest barbules from a CDC feather(strip from tip toward
bottom of stem). Save stripped feathers for bodies on small flies. It
may take 2 feathers to get a "proper" tail. Tie in the tail
tie in the ribbing, tie in the back stripe. Dub a tapered body, dubbing
is fairly sparse, stroked toward
tail after each wrap. Body is about 3/5 th of hook shank. Bring back
stripe forward, tie die and leave hanging. Make about 5 wraps with the
ribbing, tie down and trim. I'll tease the dubbing at this point to
make it buggier. Pull back the back stripe(treat it like a wing case).
Dub a heavier, thicker thorax.
Tease to make buggier. Bring back stripe forward, tie down behind
beadhead and trim. Tie in Black
CDC feather by tip and wrap like any soft hackle(4 or 5 wraps should
create sufficient legs) tie down
make several wraps with thread to secure, then bring thread forward over
top of bead head, make
a couple of wraps in front of bead head. Finish and add touch of super
glue to secure. With
black fabric paint make a dot on each side for the eyes. When eyes dry,
put a light coat of clear
nail polish over wraps and beadhead(optional). |
| Fishing Tips |
| Brief background: Came out of trying to come up with a pattern for an
isonychia nymph. Never did
try it in waters that I knew had isonychia in them, but have used it
locally, in Canada and in Vermont.
and it has caught trout, bass and panfish. Normally, I toss it
upstream a bit from my position
and dead drift it, when it reaches the end of its drift, I'll strip it
back like a streamer. It can also be
fished like a streamer. One tied in all white, has been dynamite on
smallmouth. |
