March Brown Spider
Tied by Richard Ross
  • Hackle: Brown Partridge
  • Body: Hare's mask
  • Hook: Mustad 3906, 10-16
  • Rib: Narrow Gold tinsel
  • Thread: Orange
  • Tying Instructions
I tied a March Brown Spider. Dave Huges calls it "this author's very favorite fly when it comes to searching a riffle or a run at a time when no insects are hatching and no trout are rising." Sounded useful.

It's an easy tie. Tie in Partridge butt first at the front of the hook with the feather extending over the eye. Wrap the thread back to the bend of the hook. Tie in ribbing material. Dub body forward to where hackle is tied in. Wind rib forward in three or four turns. Tie off. Rib. Wind hackle back in only one or two turns. Keep the hackle sparse. Many people strip one side of the feather prior to winding. Tie off hackle. Work thread back through hackle in one or two turns to the eye. Form head and whip finish. A nice, fast sturdy fly.
