| Instructions: Offer up thread to hook and bring back, down into the bend, while catching in the copper wire for the rib. Dub amber antron on the thread (get a good quality antron, otherwise the dubbing process will be hell...) and make a nicely tapered abdomen, up to about 2-2.5 hookeye widths behind the eye. Rib the abdomen, tie off wire and snip excess. Dub the tying thread sparsely with hare's ear and make a dubbing loop (hare's ear on _both_ strands, hence the need to dub sparingly). Snip off a small clump of fine, short deer hair (Comparadun wing hair for a size 12 would be ok), comb out, stack and clip the tips so that it is twice the desired length (which is about shank length). Put the hair in the top of the dubbing loop and spin it. Wrap a thorax, carefully stroking back the deer hair after every turn. Leave some room for the wing. Tie off the dubbing loop and clip excess. Take a short piece of raffene (twice wing length) and stroke it flat. Cut to a width of about 1.5 cm. Fold lengthwise (narrowing it) then double over (shortening to the final length). With the length-fold up and the width-fold over the eye, offer the wing up to the hook and tie in, so that the rear wing lies alongside the abdomen. Trim the excess wing and build a head. Tie in two moose body hairs, one each side of the head, as antennae, about 1.5 times the wing length,
pointing backwards. Hide their butts and whip finish. Cut the wing ends into caddis wing shape and lacquer the head. Fish during adult caddis season... |
