| Tying Instructions |
Tie on and tie in Zelon (sparse). Trim to 2/3 to 1 body length. Tie
in two peacock herls and a strand of very fine copper wire. Advance
thread to tie-off point, approximately one hook eye length behind hook
eye. Grasp herls and wire, being careful not to pull too hard on herl,
and grip it between the pads of rubber padded hackle pliers. Spin
pliers with dubbing loop twister making a wire reinforced herl rope. Be
careful not to spin too tight at first. Wrap body to thread and tie
off. Tie in stacked hair wing, extending to back of hook bend, with two
soft wraps and three binding wraps, wrapping tighter with each wrap.
Wrap once or twice through stubble ends of hair to secure wing. Lift
hair butts and whip finish head.
I came up with this pattern as a combination of two patterns I really
have a lot of luck with, the Z-Caddis and the Peacock Caddis. The
Zelon represents the shuck of an emerging caddis, and the peacock gives
it such a great profile in addition to the natural fish attractiveness
that peacock has. This pattern is also effective if tied without the
shuck and adding a dark dun or black palmered hackle, trimmed on top so
that wing lays flat.

As for the Memphis flavor, the enclosed postcards from the Jungle Room
at Graceland were procured from the legendary A. Schwabs (known for the
largest mojo section north of New Orleans) on Beale Street. Graceland
is in itself, a monument to a certain kind of taste and style. The
jungle room is the epicenter of this mecca of southern culture. It is
rumored that Elvis and the Colonel had one passion greater than peanut
butter and banana sandwiches - that being to lounge in the jungle room
and watch teenage girls wrestle on the floor. I can hardly imagine....
