West Branch Caddis Emerger:
Invented by Eddie Rief of Bangor Maine for a caddis hatch in the west branch
of the Penobscot river near Prays Camps below Mt. Katadin and Baxter State
Park. I've used the wbc in many other places and found it very productive. The
proper colors are key. Use a light brown and the landlocked salmon will
pass right on by. Different body colors work also, favorites are tan, cream,
brown, olive, green, peacock and orange.
Tying the West Branch Caddis: Just dub a body. Trim the short fibers from the mallard breast feather. Clump the wing together and tie in just ahead of the body. Make sure that the wing curves down over the body and the wing needs to be as short as the hook. Make a brown thread head and tie off.
It's easy and it works. I fish the Roach River in Kokadjo in June. Great hatches every night. Many wild landlocked salmon. This small river is now catch and release. I like a long tippet, about 5 feet of 2lb test. This gives the fly plenty of movement. The green bodied one did exceptionally well for me. Sometimes I grease the leader and tippet so I can keep better track of the fly. |
