| Tying Instructions |
This fly is one of my favorite caddis patterns for fishing pocket water and
the head of plunge pools. Between the deer hair body and the
elk/deer hair wing it floats like a cork. This pattern was originally tied
as just a deer hair body and elk hair wing (yeah Opie I know you tied it as
well), but I like the hackle in there. It may not be needed (as the tail
probably isn't as well, but I like it this way).
- Tie in a sparse section of Z-lon leaving about 4 times the desired
length hanging out from the bend of the hook. This will make it easier to
trim the spun deer body without cutting the Z-lon in the process.
- Tie in and spin the first clump of deer hair fairly small. Spin and
pack clumps of deer hair until about the 60% point of the hook shank is
reached. I like to trim the hair at this point to about twice the desired
thickness. Use the shell of a pen, hair packer, or half hitch tool to
compact the hair (this is why I leave twice the desired thickness) and wrap
thread in front of compacted hair to form a nice dense body. Half hitch
once or twice in front of hair. Trim to desired thickness, tapering
towards tail.
- Tie in and wrap hackle. I vary the amount of hackle depending on the
type of water the fly will be fished in. Leave enough room at the front of
the hook to tie in hair wing. I like to make 1-2 wraps of hackle OVER the
deer hair for a nicer transition from body to hackle.
- Tie in deer hair wing, being careful not to break the thread when
tightening loops. Trim head to length desired.
