Lepoard Caddis
Tied by Dave McCants
  • Body Shell: Betts Z-Lon light ginger
  • Wing: Leopard (thrift shop hat - Really!)
  • Body: Peacock (near eye, one piece of herl
  • Head: Peacock herl (one piece near eye, opposite side)
  • Hook: TMC2457 #10-16
  • Thread: Uni-thread black
  • Tying Instructions
Note that I am left-handed, so if you are not, you will want to swap the sides of the peacock you take the herl from.

Tie in thread mid shank. Then tie in Z-Lon like a trailing shuck spread around the hook and cover with the black thread (start with thread in above the hook position so the Z-Lon is easier to spread). Good even distribution around the hook is very important.

At barb end of thread covered Z-Lon, tie in a single strand of peacock herl by the butt and wrap forward 10 to 14 turns and tie off (about 2/3 of shank length). Note that the barbules should face backwards toward the butt (just the opposite of how we will do the head).

Pull the Z-Lon forward over the peacock herl and make two wraps of thread. Gather Z-Lon in fingertips and lightly loosen thread just enough to push the Z-Lon back and create a bubble around the herl body and tie off.

Cut wing material (10 to 14 hairs from leopard) but DO NOT STACK! By it's nature the material is of varying lengths, with multiple colors of black, brown and white (sometimes in a single strand of hair). Tie in wings so that a few of the hairs extend beyond the end of the body and tie off.

Take another piece of herl from near the eye (but this time from the opposite side of the peacock eye) and trim the butt end so that you are using the longer herl near the center of the piece you have removed. Tie in the herl so that the barbules are facing forward (toward the eye) and make 5 to 7 turns, whip finish head and cement.

Special Note: If this pattern is tied on a light wire bent hook 1xl, you can trim off the Z-Lon and end up with a great ant pattern in an emergency!
