Tied by Linda Foote
  • Weight: .015 lead wire
  • Overbody: 1/4" wide clear elastic dyed gold yellow - Rit dye works great ("scud back" - Can be found in most sewing/craft shops)
  • Ribbing: Dark brown Super Floss or Larva Lace
  • Thread: Gold or yellow 6/0
  • Body: Golden Stone dubbing or any gold blend
  • Tail: Goose biots - gold
  • Antennae: Goose biots - gold
  • Legs: Mallard dyed wood duck
  • Wing Buds: Same as above
  • Hook: TMC 300 #12
  • Tying Instructions
Wrap hook with thread. Wrap entire length of shank with lead wire, leaving 1/8 of an inch clear at hook eye. Flatten with pliers. Cover lead wraps with thread. Tie in antennae, on to the side of the lead wraps and cinching in at hook eye. Tie on a small bunch of dubbing at the bend of the hook, over lead wire. Tie in goose biots on the sides. Tie in ribbing. Trim clear elastic to a point on one end. Tie in as overbody.

Dub about halfway up the shank. Pull overbody up and tie off, just past dubbing. Do not trim it off. Wrap rib forward, keeping wraps very close together. Tie off rib and trim. Lay overbody back toward hook bend, and wrap thread back over it a couple of turns. To form legs, clean the lower part of the shank up, cut off toward the tip and leave 2-3 barbs for the legs. Save the remainder for the other sets of legs. Tie in legs, so they flat on the wire, up against the overbody..

Dub towards hook eye, about 1/4 of the way up. Now for the wing buds, using a dubbing needle, pull the clear elastic forward and over the needle. Pulling firmly, press thumb tightly against the clear elastic and pull the dubbing needle out. Do not release pressure on the clear elastic. Roll your other thumb onto the pinched section, and hold firmly while you tie off the elastic. This is the first wing bud. To prepare the second wing bud, pull the elastic back over itself, toward the hook bend, and wrap a few turns with thread. Prepare another set of legs, tie in and dub. Again, pull the elastic forward, over the dubbing needle. Pulling firmly, press thumb tightly against the clear elastic and pull the dubbing needle out. Do not release pressure on the clear elastic. Roll your other thumb onto the pinched section, and hold firmly while you tie off the elastic. Pull the elastic back over itself, toward the hook bend, and wrap with a few turns of thread. Tie in the last pair of legs and dub, leaving room for the head.

Pull the elastic toward the hook eye, and wind thread forward. Dub back to the last tie off point. Pull elastic back and tie off. Trim off excess elastic. Using a marking pen, (I use a Sharpie Ultra Fine Point) mark the overbody to imitate the real thing. Last, but not least, using velcro, glued onto a popsicle stick, rough up the underside of the body. And wallah, you are done ;-))
