| Tying Instructions |
This is an experimental fly, yet to be tried so bear with me.
Begin by tying on the thread. Cut a strip of chamois, about 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch wide. Tie in at the midpoint of the hook, on top of the hook. Wrap back to the bend. Then on each side, tie in the rubber legs for the tail. Then wrap the thread forward to the midpoint. Tie in the ribbing wire and wrap back to the bend and return the thread to the midpoint. Wrap the chamois forward the midpoint of the hook, keeping the material tight, with slight overlaps of each wrap. Tie off the material when the wrap in on top of the hook and cut. Counter wrap the wire onto the chamois, to the midpoint and tie in and cut. Then take a piece of chamois cut in 1/2 inch wide strip. Tie it in beginning at the eye and working back to the midpoint of the hook, so the dangling end is sticking out towards the bend. Tie in the brown chenille the same way and move the thread to the eye. Wrap the chenille forward to the eye, tie off and clip. To back with the thread, and tie in the three pieces of rubber legs, evenly spaced, on top of the chenille. Then pull the 1/2 chamois strip forward over the legs, and tie in at the head with 4-5 tight wraps. Clip it off, create a head just behind the eye with the thread, whip finish, and then some head cement on the thread and the top of the wing case.
This fly is indeed one of my "concept" flies. It has undergone several variations, including no rubber legs for legs, but instead hackle palmered through some heavily dubbed thorax, and even biots for the tail and antenna. I found the rubberlegs to be a nice touch for these things though and the color I wanted, I found easier to do with the chenille for the thorax. Anyway, try it out and let me know how it works for you. I have yet to fish this fly but found this forum a great way to review this original pattern. |
