Glassy Bugger
Tied by Kat Cruickshank
  • Head: 2mm bead chain
  • Thread: 6/0
  • Hackle: Grizzly saddle hackle
  • Tail: Marabou blood plume
  • Body: Silvered glass beads, 3mm
  • Hook: These particular ones are tied on #6 Baitholder hooks (waste not, want not =)) but any heavy wire nymph/wet hook would work.
  • Tying Instructions
Pinch barb down so you can thread beads on hook. Attach bead chain eyes with figure-8 wraps, tie off, and cement wraps with a drop of Krazy glue. Thread 4 beads onto hook, and push them forward to give yourself room to work. Reattach thread at the bend. Tie on the tail plume; if you keep wraps tight and flat, you should have no problem backing the rearmost glass bead over the trimmed butt of the marabou. Advance the thread under the bead and make a few wraps just in front of it, to snug it in place. Tie in a long grizzly hackle by the tip, shiny side toward you, just in front of the rear bead. Make 3 or 4 wraps of hackle, tie it off, trim it, then push the next bead up against it. This will push the hackle fibres to the rear. Advance the thread under the bead, tie in the next section of hackle, and repeat this procedure until you build a "palmered" bead body. You should have enough space between the frontmost bead and the head, to wrap a collar of hackle. Whip finish off BEHIND the bead chain eyes. Cement wraps with krazy glue.

This fly sinks headfirst, so jig it sharply for that "dying minnow" action!
