Royal Humpy
Tied by Dennis Perkinson
  • Thread: Black
  • Head: Black thread
  • Hackle: Brown and grizzly
  • Tail: Dark moose hair
  • Hook: Dry fly size 8-18
  • Overbody: Light elk hair
  • Underbody: Red floss
  • Wings: White calf tail
  • Tying Instructions
    • Lay down a base of black thread from the hook eye to the hook bend.
    • Tie in 5-8 dark moose hairs for the tail.
    • Tie in pinch of light elk hair for overbody. Tie hair in by tips so the butt ends extend back over the hook bend.
    • Wrap thread forward to halfway point of hook shank.
    • Tie in calf wings, upright and divided.
    • Tie in red floss just behind wings. Wrap floss back and forth several times between wings and the point where the overbody is tied on. Wrap until the underbody is fairly fat. (How fat is a matter of personal choice)
    • Tie off floss just behind wings.
    • Pull elk overbody forward and tie down behind wings. Clip excess hair.
    • Tie in brown hackle behind wings.
    • Wrap hackle 2-3 times behind wings and 2-3 times in front of wings.
    • Tie off hackle
    • Form small head with thread.
    • Whip finish.
