Caddis Pupa
Tied by John Simonson
  • Hook: 1xl #16-20
  • Legs: Brown hen or partridge fibers
  • Thread: Danville 6/0 cream
  • Antennae: Mallard flank fibers
  • Wing and Thorax Shel: Natural raffia
  • Abdomen: SLF caddis orange
  • Tying Instructions
    • Start thread near eye of hook and wrap to the bend.
    • Prepare body dubbing mat (make a 1 1/2"L x 1/8"W mat, not too thick).
    • Spin bobbin counter clockwise to flatten thread and insert prepared mat.
    • Unroll thread from bobbin (about 8" from bobbin tip to dubbing mat) keeping tension on the bobbin, roll the thread back onto the spool. This should tighten/spin the dubbing in the thread.
    • Wind 2/3 towards eye of hook.
    • Prepare raffia (cut a 1 1/2"L x 1/8"W strip, round off one end).
    • Wet raffia wing with saliva and tie in , the rounded part of the wing should extend to the hook bend.
    • Fold back the front part of the wing which will cover the thorax.
    • Tie in legs (I wrap hackle 2-3x and cut fibers away from the top).
    • Dub the thorax.
    • Wet raffia and pull over the thorax, tie down and cut excess rafia.
    • Tie in 6-8 mallard flank fibers butt ends facing the eye. Fiber tips extend 1/3 past the hook bend. Curl the fibers with your scissors (like you curl ribbon). This last step is only for the tyers benefit. The fibers will move with the water current and won't stay curled. Trim off the middle fibers leaving 2-3 on each side.
    Fishing Tips
I have fished this pattern when October Caddis are hatching and change the body color to represent other caddis species. The raffia when wet gives a realistic look to the hatching pupa. Fish it under a caddis dry or in tandem with another nymph. I learned about this pattern from Davy Woton, maker of SLF dubbing.
