Blood Midge Larva
Tied by Todd Mobley
  • Hook: Any small scud hook to match the naturals, my swap flies are tied on Tiemco #18's
  • Thorax: Peacock herl
  • Thread: Red 8/0 Uni
  • Abdomen: Red 8/0 Uni
  • Head: Red 8/0 Uni
  • Rib: Small copper wire
  • Tying Instructions
This is a pretty simple pattern, so I won't go through step-by-step instructions, but here are a few pointers:
    • When you tie in the rib, tie it in where the thorax will be and fasten it down along the shank into the start of the bend. This way the body will be smoother. Careful wraps with the thread while forming the body will also help.
    • Take only a few wraps of somewhat "shaggy" peacock herl when tying in the thorax. Be careful not to crowd the eye, it is easy to do on these little suckers.
    • That is all there is to it. A quick tying, effective fly. If they're feeding on top, add a small post of foam at the head of the fly to make a suspending midge.
