| Tying Instructions |
Tail: Tie in a small clump of elk hair, about 1.5 times the width of the gape, tied immediately above the barb.
Body: Tie in gold or bronze tinsel, and dub a tapered yellow-orange body forward to about 1/3 the shank length back from the eye. Tie in a brown hackle at least one full size smaller than the hook size, and wrap the hackle back to the tail. Capture the hackle with the tinsel, and wrap the tinsel forward (opposite to the hackle wrap) to your thread. Tie off tinsel, trim tinsel and hackle. You may wish to whip finish with 2-3 turns, to secure the tinsel.
Wing; Tie in a sparse clump of elk hair at the tie-off point of the tinsel, you should be able to see the body through the wing after it is tied on. The end of the wing should be approximately even with the start of the tail, just above the barb of the hook. Tie in a grizzly hackle, dry fly style.
Thorax: Dub a thick thorax of slightly more orange dubbing (I prefer to add a little sparkle yarn in the dubbing). Wrap the grizzly hackle forward 2-3 full turns, spaced apart. Tie off at head, whip finish and apply a drop of head cement.
Most orange Stimulators use a bright orange abdomen, and a lighter thorax. I find reversing these colors to be as effective, if not more... This is a killer searching pattern, and works well when the Stones are on the water. Can also be used as a Caddis imitation. |
