Al's Rat
Tied by David Masters
  • Hook: # 20 dry fly
  • Abdomen: Dark brown monocord
  • Collar: Very lightly dubbed muscrat
  • Tying Instructions
Wrap dark brown monocord from just behind the eye to just before the bend and back. Can be slightly tapered and you can make it thicker. Just behind the eye dub in a very small amount of grey muscrat, finish.
    Fishing Tips
This fly can be sight or blind fished. It will usually stay in the film but the fly and the tippet can be greased (about 6 to 8 inches) on the tippet. It can be fished down and across or just down. Twitching it while it is downstream can be effective. Fast and slow retreives also work. It\'s really a midge pupa imitation and works remarkably well.
