| Fishing Tips |
Normally I fish the Back Swimmer (some places it is called a Water Walker) with a small split shot about 12" to 18" above the fly. The usual size of the shot is a #6, which is the smallest that I have been able to find and is probably the smallest made. The goal is to achieve a very slow sink rate and the fly itself is not heavy enough to achieve that steady rate. After a few seconds I start a very slow retrieve, just enough to cause the fly to rise slightly, then drift back down. There is experimentation needed to arrive at the right depth and the correct speed of retrieve.
This fly has been very productive for me in the last two years in eastern Washington and in Montana. This last September I used it on a small private lake in Montana and landed 19 rainbows over three pounds, had five fish break the 4x tippet and turned one loose that was too large for the net we had with us. That was an unusual day but it really impressed the guide I was fishing with, in fact he bought a dozen of the flies for his own use.
I hope this fly works for you! |
