Mataura Caddis
Tied by Michael Bowman
  • Thread: Color to match desired body color
  • Rib: Copper wire
  • Hook: Size 14-22 pupae or straight nymph hook
  • Thorax: Spiky dubbing (hare's ear)
  • Abdomen: Thread (Peacock or pheasant tail also works well)
  • Tying Instructions
Start thread on hook and wrap back to bend. Add wire. (Attach peacock/pheasant if appropriate) Build up abdomen w/ good taper. (Tie off peacock/pheasant if applicable). Wrap wire, tie off and clip. Now the thorax is most important...you need to 'touch-dub' -- use just a little bit of dubbing on the waxed thread and make it as spikey as possible. Wrap a small head and whip finish.
    Fishing Tips
I have fished this pattern w/most success as a trailer tied onto the bend of a larger fly....hares ear, muddler, woolly bugger, etc.
