Spent Cream Caddis
Originator: A.K. Best
Tied by Richard Frank
  • Hook: #18-24 dry fly
  • Thread: #8 Light Cahill
  • Hackle: Barred ginger
  • Wing: Clear hen pheasant breast feathers
  • Abdomen: Cream dubbing - rabbit
  • Tying Instructions
Wrap the thread back to the hook bend, then wax the thread and spin on the dubbing. Wrap the dubbing two thirds of the way back up the hook so that it tapers with the heaviest application near the hook bend. Strip a breast feather to proper size and dampen it by stroking it back with wet fingers. Tie the feather in flat-wing style. Tie in one barred ginger hackle and wrap forward a few turns, tie off and trim. Wrap a small thread head and whip finish.
    Fishing Tips
This is one of those little flies for that particular moment when little cream bodies are floating in the film of a gentle run or a tequila clear pool. Trim the hackle bottom as required and drift drag free in the film. (Oh, carry a few with olive bodies as well.)

A.K. Best says that this pattern can also be used as a small beetle.
