Tying Instructions
Hydropsyche colonica is profusely gilled and lends itself well to tying with a dubbing loop, no tail is needed as the dubbing serves that purpose. Thin strips of wine bottle lead are used to create a near flat underbody on which to wrap the dubbing. In order; attach thread, wire ribbing at tail, one fine wrap of lead and then, a slip of varnished turkey breast just forward of where you would put a wing case. This will be the shiny back of the head of the nymph. Return to tail, form a dubbing loop and twist a very small amount of olive Australian possum into a rope. Dub forward to the turkey, tie off, wrap two strands of peacock herl for legs, tie off the turkey, then rib and finish...
Fishing Tips
This nymph is ubiquitous, limestones and freestones, it is not profuse but the fish know what it is....:^) You can fish it alone as a searching pattern or in summer as the leader fly on a two chained nymph rig with a smaller mayfly nymph as the tail fly. In winter, the #14 caddis becomes the tail fly behind a #10 bugeye bomb. That is my #1 nymph set for the big runs of 'bows on the Tongariro.
