Beadhead Speckled Sedge Originator: Ian Martin Tied by Bob Petti |
|
Head: 1/8 inch black bead
Abdomen: Bright green micro chenille
Hook: Kamasan B420
Thread: Olive Danville 6/0
Thorax: Olive squirrel dubbing
|
|
| Tying Instructions |
- Slip on the bead. With the Kamasan hook, depending on the brand
of bead, you might have to open the hook with pliers a bit. When I
did this, I just bent them back into shape after they were inserted
in my vise.
- Wrap a base of thread along the hook shank, going deep into
the bend.
- Slip the end of the micro chenille inside the bead (the big
hole) to fill the gap between the bead and the shank. Secure
the chenille along the hook shank, wrapping deep into the bend.
- Return the thread to the bead and wrap the chenille forward.
- Tie off the chenille and dub some dark olive squirrel in the
space between the bead and the chenille. Whip finish right behind
the bead.
- To make the fly more effective, pick out some of the dubbing
on the bottom of the shank to simulate legs.

| Fishing Tips |
As with all caddis larva imitations, this one should be fished
right along the bottom of the stream, dead drift.
I first saw this fly on the 'Virtual Fly Shop' when Ian Martin
wrote an article about his favorite river, the Grand. I urge
people to visit that sight and look up his article in the Eastern
Canada regional section. There is more information about the fly
pattern, and others, as well as fishing tactics. |
