Ian's In-Between Caddis
Tied by Bruce Wainman
  • Thread: 8/0 olive Unithread
  • Body: FlyRite Caddis Green (synthetic) or to match natural
  • Hook: Standard dry fly size 14-18
  • Wing: Three or four CDC feathers
  • Tail: Trailing shuck of amber zlon (trilobal antron) with ends fused
  • Tying Instructions
    • Lay down a thread underbody, take thread to half way around the bend.
    • Starting half way down the bend dub green body up to 1/3 of hook shank- try to avoid the urge to make a nice taper and keep the body fat particularly at the bend.
    • Fuse ends of antron triling shuck with flame.
    • Tie in shuck at the end of the dubbed body. Try to keep the free ends of the shuck distributed around the hook shank.
    • Select 3 or 4 natural CDC feathers and tie them in by the tip (note: it is easiest to tie all the CDC feathers in at once after they have been aligned manually) then lock in CDC with a couple of half-hitches.
    • Dub forward with same dubbing as rear leaving just enough room for the head and to tie in the CDC.
    • Tie in the CDC butts leaving a slight ballon of CDC near the back of the hook(note: tying in the butts is easier if you put your dubbing needle or scissors between the hook shank and the CDC feathers when they are being pulled forward).
    • Leaving a small amount of the CDC butts showing cut of the rest of the CDC.
    • Whip finish twice.
    • Try to figure out what to do with the other 90% of the 4 CDC feathers that you just cut off.
    Fishing Tips
This pattern is to be fished in a dead drift whenever fish are lunging at caddis emergers. Make sure to never use floatant on the fly. The fly can usually be reused after a thorough drying in dessicant.
