FC Pearl Shiner
Tied by Tom Tully
  • Head Cements: Dave's Flexament, initially before putting eyes on, followed by 2 coats of Loon Hard Head, clear
  • Weight: Front half of shank, #2 lead wire (optional)
  • Body: Long strand/large pearl crystal chenille
  • Hook: Mustad 34011, EC 1107N, or equivalent size 1 or 2
  • Thread: Red flat waxed nylon
  • Eyes: Small white/black pupil decal/stick-on type
  • Tail: White ostrich, 6-8 strands, half shank length Pearl crystal flash, 8-10 strands, same length as ostrich
  • Tying Instructions
Smash barb always! Tie on the ostrich hearl first, then the crystal flash on top of the ostrich. I tie in the crystal chenille just behind the eye, and wrap over it backward to the bend, then wrap it forward and tie off just behind the eye. It's OK to have all of that bulk to cover up to build up a head big enough to put eyes on... The head should be just about 1/4 inch. Take flat nosed pliers and smash the head so as to make a flat place to put the eyes. I put on a layer of Dave's Flexament to get that penetrating effect, and then put on the eyes after it dries. Finish with 2 coats of Loon Hard Head, clear, or your favorite hard gloss head cement, such as Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails or Jolly Glaze, and that's it. This is an Ed Story pattern from Feather Craft Fly Fishing in St. Louis, Missouri. It can also be sized down on regular hooks to be used in freshwater. Other colors of crystal chenille can also be used, making it a very versitile pattern.

    Happy Tying & Tight Lines!
