Pink Squirrel
Originator: John Brekke
Tied by Gary Webb
  • Thread: Brown or white 8/0
  • Body: Dubbed fox squirrel back and orange Antron (3/4 - 1/4)
  • Thorax: Flourescent pink chenille (fine)
  • Head: Gold bead
  • Rib: Pearl Krystal Flash
  • Tail: Pearl Krystal Flash
  • Hook: Wet fly 12-16
  • Tying Instructions
Start by placing the bead on the hook. Attach thread to hook and tie in 3 pieces of Krystal Flash at the rear of the hook. Two pieces can be short, but one should be long enough to wind on for the rib. For the body dub on the burnt orange squirrel blend. Stop the body an eye length back from the bead. Wind the rib forward and tie off. Tie in the chenille and wrap a turn or two up to the bead. Put a little head cement on the back of the bead and rub it off with the thread as you tie off with your favorite finish. Clip the tails so that they extend a bit beyond the bend of the hook.
    Fishing Tips
This fly was developed by a local fly fisherman, John Bethke from Westby WI. Supposedly he got tired of getting strikes on the flourescent pink BioStrike indicator on his leader. (Give the trout what they want)

I have caught Brook, Brown and Rainbow trout on this fly from streams in western Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota. Especially good to use when the water is less than perfectly clear.
