Tying Instructions
Gather materials with color of natural you want to copy. If using dye remember not to boil your materials (<140f). Consult Dyeing and Bleaching by A.K. Best for details.
Make your Voljc Wings. Consult Oliver Edward's Flytyers Masterclass by Oliver Edwards, Micropatterns by Darrel Martin, or the new Benchside Flytyers Reference for details. A few suggestions: 1) Use webby soft feathers with a thin center quill, 2) Use PVC cement (the stuff for the white pipe), 3) Kill the elasticity of the panty hose with balsa wood type model glue, 4) Try adding mottled and other effects from the underneath side with acrylic paint, markers, etc. results can be very good.
Make your dubbing. Cut your hair to about 4/5 inch. Add no more than 15% synthetic if you want.
Once your wings and dubbing are ready then the tying the fly itself is pretty easy.
- Start your thread and run it down to the bend.
- Make and lock a dubbing loop (I sometimes lock with a tiny spot of Zap-A-Gap).
- Tease your dubbing into a long flat shape and place it in the loop.
- Using a dubbing whirl spin until you have a shaggy chenille of deer hair.
- Wrap chenille of deer hair touching turns until about 2-3mm from eye. Lock and trim off excess loop.
- Trim top fairly close with slight slope low (front) to high (back). Then trim sides at about 60degrees sloping to top.
- Place your cut out wing (Consult Caddis Super Hatches by Richards and Braendle for genus specific shapes) on with small amount of the PVC glue. Overhang shouldn't be more than half of hook length.
- Bind the wing with pinch loops and then similarly bind your antennae. Get the uptilt of the antennae by making a turn of thread underneath them.
- Tie in hackle forward style and work backwards with hackle pliers 3 or 4 turns.
- Do a 3 or 4 turn whip finish and trim off hackle and tying thread.
- On smooth surface make sure fly sits correctly.
- Snip Snip and Viola!

Fishing Tips
Fish dead drift, or use minute wiggles to simulate struggle. One of my best browns came with this fly in a high meadow pond, fished commando style with fly skittered across suface.
