Rubber Spey Tied by John McBride |
|
Thread: 3/0 mono
Head: Double whip-finish
Hook: EagleClaw L063M size #10
Abdomen: Flo ultra chenille (color of choice)
Hackle: Flo-rubber leg material
|
|
| Tying Instructions |
1. Tie on thread just behind eye, and wrap to mid hook shank.
2. Tie on chenille (color of choice) with two wraps then two half-hitches,
and wrap thread forward to an eyes width behind hook eye, half-hitch thread.
3.Place a drop of head cement at tie in, and spread forward to hook eye with
your bodkin. (this makes the chenille last for more bites)
4. Take two strands of rubber leg material (also color of choice) and wrap
around two fingers twice. Pinch the loop ends with other hand, so the cut
ends will be at the tail end of hook.
5. Tie these looped ends just behind eye with two loose wraps, then two tight
wraps, drawing tight. (as you would deer-hair to make it fan out around the hook)
6. Two half-hitches, and two whip finishes, and a drop of head cement.
7. Place scissors into tail end loops and cut to form the spey type collar.
Trim as needed.
I have used these rigs all over the U.S. and always produced fish. I keep three different sizes in my flybox for different types of fish.
Use with a piece of night-crawler on a cane pole, or a slip bobber rig for kids.
This gets the deep suspended Bluegills very well, all year long.
Use a bottom bouncer rig with crappie minnow for Yellow Perch/Walleye.
Use with a bubble rig for Bluegills/Crappie on the beds for the big males. |

Recipe: Camp Lunch Batter
- 2 cups oil of choice
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup Drake's Crispy Frymix
- 1/2 cup pancake flour (or pancake mix will do)
- 1/2 teaspoon Lawry's seasoning salt
Mix together in a gallon size Zip/loc bag, and freeze till needed.
(Will be enough for about 50 fillets, and keeps for a year)
Heat 2 cups of oil in an iron skillet or pan till very hot.
Place fillets on a paper towel and pat dry, then place into dry
batter and shake till covered. (About ten at a time works well)
Let cook about one min. per side, till golden brown.
My dad just likes flour, but by campfire light you can't tell
when they are done. The pancake flour, and Drake's mix turn golden brown when done, and you can see this! Fillets when overcooked are like hockey-pucks! Very rubbery! |
