Chamois Caddis Pupa
Tied by Gary Armstrong
  • Hook: Any nymph hook, size 12 -18 to match the hatch
  • Thread: Brown, about an 8/0
  • Abdomen: Chamois strip, cut in strips about 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide
  • Rib: Gold colored wire
  • Thorax/head: Peacock herl
  • Tying Instructions
Tie in the thread and wrap to rear and back to mid point. Tie in Wire and tie in to the back. Then move the thread back to about 1/3 behind the eye, and tie in the chamois on top of the hook and wrap back to bend of hook. Move thread forward. Then wrap the chamois, tightly, one wrap against the other until you get to the thread, about 1/3 behind the eye. Tie off and cut chamois. Counter wrap the wire around teh chamois, tie off, and clip. Tie in 2-3 spears of peacock and with thread, wrap around the hook to the eye. Tie off, whip finish and you are done.
    Fishing Tips
Fish this fly any time of day on a good caddis stream and you will catch fish with it. It makes an excellent dropper below and Elk Hair style caddis or below another nymph such as a Hare\'s Ear or Pheasant Tail. Or you can fish it alone. I will usually put a small split shot about a foot above it so it will bounce along the bottom fairly well. Variations for tying include adding a bead head, or a wrap of soft hackle or CDC around the head for some more action on the fly.

This fly is a favorite local pattern on the Provo River in Utah. I don\'t know how it was developed or why, but it is a heck of a little bug. I have used it on several caddis streams in Utah, Idaho and Montana and had great success with it. It is very durable and has saved many fishing days for me. Try it out pretty much any time of year and it will work very well.
