'Madame X'
Tied by Monte Smith
  • Hook: Curved nymph hook (2XL) #6-12 Swap pattern was size 8.
  • Tail: Natural deer or elk hair
  • Wing/Head: Natural deer or elk hair, tied bullet head style
  • Legs: Small white rubber
  • Body: Sparse light yellow antron & fur dubbing blend
  • Tying Instructions
The 'Madame X' has fooled many trout for me this season, and I love it's versatility. You can grease it and fish it on top, fish it as is just below the surface, strip it like a streamer, you name it. Very effective under many conditions.

One can vary the color for different uses (I've always found yellow to be the most productive over the course of a season here in western Oregon). I know of some B.C. fishermen who use an olive-bodied 'Madame X' to use during the great Traveling Sedge hatches in the Kamloops area. Orange works during the Salmonfly hatches, yellow or olive shades for hoppers. It's a pattern with a lot of possibilities. I have found that tying the legs with small rubber provides the best action in the water. Any movement and the fly shimmies and twitches just calling out to the fish!

Enjoy! Thank you to all the swap participants. Can't wait to put some time in at bench to stock up for next season.
