Hackle: Grizzly
Antennae: Moose mane
Body: Spun deer hair
Hook: Standard dry fly
Thread: Tan or light olive 8/0

| Tying Instructions |
Start thread at eye and wind to bend. Spin on small clump of deer hair,
pull the deer fibers toward the back and wrap thread several times in
front. Repeat this process forward over a little more than 3/4 of hook
shank. This allows you to get a denser body by "packing" the deer hair.
Tie a half hitch in the thread, then trim the deer hair to create a
tapered body with longer fuller fibers left extending off the back of
the hook. Next, tie in a black moose mane fiber at it's center, double
the fiber over so both ends extend over the hook eye, and wrap thread
forward far enough to secure antennae. Wrap thread back to deer hair and
tie in a grizzly hackle. Bring thread forward to just behind eye, wrap
hackle forward 5-6 turns, tie off, whip finish.
I like to fish this caddis as the top of a dry/dropper rig. The deer
hair gives it excellent floatability. I can also be fished dead drift,
but is frequently more effective when skittered or swung accross the
surface. Often I will tie this pattern but leave it untrimmed or very
full. This way I can trim it a streamside to exactly what I think will
work. Hope it works as well for you as it has for me!!! |
