CDC & Elk Hair Caddis
Tied by Walter Pike
  • Body: CDC
  • Hook: Dry fly
  • Wing: Fine deer hair (coastal deer hair)
  • Thread: Tan 6/0 or 8/0
  • Tying Instructions

    Instructions:

Tying this fly is simplicity itself. Offer the thread to the hook at a point on the shaft above the point of the hook. Wind back to tie in point. Prepare CDC by stroking back fibers to tip to form a dense "rope". Attach tip to hook. clamp it by tying once around CDC tip once under (around hook shank) and once over again so locking the CDC in place.

Wind CDC around shank to from the body. You may wish to create the reverse taper characteristic of caddis. As you reach the eye long straggling strands will come free and create "legs".

Level deer hair in a stacker measure a small stack deer hair along hook shank ensuring that the deer hair just reaches the outside curve of the hook bend. Cut off level with front of hook eye. tie in deer hair wind by first taking 2 or 3 turns one in front of each other but very loosely. Take a further turn in front again and pull tight. This will stop the deer hair spreading to much and forming a tumble weed imitation. Take turn around hook shank in front of the eye and whip finish.

    Fishing Tips
CDC is a material not commonly used in South Africa and I bought what I think is all there was to complete this swap. The fly is really nice and has that property of being buggy. The hair wing provides the illusion of movement and the tendrils of CDC which spread over all directions will suggest all manner of things, legs, shucks etc. but probably the most important, movement and life.
