Rabou
Tied by Joe Lofgren
  • Eyes: Bead chain, silver or brass
  • Thread: Rust 3/0
  • Tail: Rust Marabou, and pearl krystal flash
  • Abdomen: Rust rabbit fur
  • Head: Rust rabbit fur, or strands of rust marabou and rest of hook
  • Hook: TMC 200B, or similar
  • Tying Instructions
Tie in the marabou for a tail, then tie in mixed krystal flash, gold and pearl, about 4 pieces on each side of the hook. You could use other colors as desired. Next make a dubbing loop, put the rabbit fur in the loop and twist, wrap forward to the bead head eyes, if you want to continue to wrap the rest of the fly with the rabbit fur continue. If you want to finish the head area off with strips of marabou feather, tie off the rabbit fur, tie in some marabou feather strips, move thread to eye area of the hook, then wrap marabou forward to the eye, tie off, and whip finish.
    Fishing Tips
Simple fly to tie and use, you can tie in any color combination you wish, yellow with a red head etc. I made this fly to solve a problem I had fishing for Bluegill on a pond with a submerged weedbed. The fish were in the weedbed, heavily weighted flies got on the weeds and for whatever reason the Bluegill would not come and take a surface fly. This fly sank just deep enough to stay above the weeds and sank enough below the surface to get the Bluegill's attention. So far wherever I have fished this fly it has been very successful. It also has on occasion caught some very nice Bass also. My wife came up with the name, so I kept it, and my son came up with the material and color combinations. This fly is certinly not original. I'm sure somebody has come up with this fly before me and just called it something else. All I know is that it works and is simple to tie, everything you would want in a fly pattern.
