CDC Blue Wing Olive
Tied by James Shearer
  • Hook: 16-22 Light Wire Dry
  • Hackle: Dun
  • Tail: Moose Mane & CDC
  • Thread: Olive
  • Body: Olive CDC Feather
  • Wing: Polypro
  • Tying Instructions
    • Tie the thread at mid point on the fly hook and wrap to the hook shank for a dry tail, leaving the thread tag, which will be used later.

    • Tie on 6 moose mane fibers for the under tail.

    • Bring thread forward and tie in a poly wing as a split hair wing, any wing will do I just tied in poly.

    • Bring thread back to the base of the tail and tie in the CDC feather by the tip. Make sure and stroke the fibers together. Use 2 turns of thread to secure the CDC and then lift both the moose mane and CDC together and take 2 more wraps under the tail assemble, then 1 more over the top of the CDC and then lift the butt section of the CDC wrapping in front of the CDC and bring the thread to the base of the wing.

    • Pull the CDC feather at 90% to the top of the hook shank and bring the thread tag along side and clip together with hackle pliers making sure the thread is straight with the CDC quill. Then twist the thread and the CDC feather together 2 twists and start to wrap the CDC body. As you do each wrap of the hook shank, make 1 twist with the CDC/thread and wrapto the base of the wing and tie off.

    • Then tie on a dry fly hackle of your own style. I have tried Hans's style and have found it to be stronger and better for my style of dry fly hackle tying.

    • Enjoy...Tight lines and bright trout
