CDC Baetis Emerger
Tied by Jim Woolacott

  • Hook: Light wire scud hook, sz 18-24
  • Thread: Olive
  • Dubbing: Olive superfine
  • Tail: Teal dyed olive
  • Tying Instructions
This pattern has worked well for me on slow moving spring creeks. I did really well with it on Idaho\'s Silver Creek. The original pattern from which I copied the fly had the cdc tied loop wing style. Well I tried to tie it that way and while the original looks great, my efforts at duplication resulted in ugly flies. So, I stripped a half-inch section of cdc barbs from the stem and tied in the barbs like an elk hair wing. I repeated this two more times, for a total of three clumps of cdc. This gives the wing a rather full looking effect. Clip off the butts close and then clip the tips short or no more than 1/2 the shank length. A size 18 seems to be as large as this pattern can stand, smaller sizes work great in the fall when baetis are really in full swing. The pattern could be modified to a variety of colors. Good fishing!
