Lee's Midge
Tied by Charlie Garwood
  • Thread: Gray 8/0
  • Body: Gray ostrich herl
  • Collar: Light dun micro-barb
  • Hook: TMC 100 #20-26
  • Tying Instructions
This pattern came to me via a fishing associate (Lee). It's extremely simple and fast to tie. The fluff on the ostrich herl lays flat against the hook when wet and makes a tremendous midge pattern. Experiment with colors to better match the midges of your favorite stretch of fast moving, cold water.

Start thread 1/3 of hook behind eye. Build a thread base by winding thread back to the bend. Tie in a piece of ostrich herl, wind thread forward to a distance of 1/8 inch behind the eye. Wind the ostrich herl forward and secure with thread. Tie in a piece of light dun hackle (micro-barb) and make two turns (not more than three turns). Secure hackle with thread and build a small thread head. Whip finish and lightly glue.
