Simple Swimming Damsel Nymph
Tied by Steve Stillabower
  • Eyes: 1/8" bead chain
  • Body: 3 strands peacock herl, twisted into a rope
  • Thread: Black or olive
  • Hook: Mustad 80150BR, size 10
  • Tail: SPARSE olive marabou
  • Tying Instructions
Simple to tie fly, variation of Dave E.'s 'My Damsel'. I agree with Dave that a sparse tail is the key to this type of fly. I tie the tail pretty far into the bend of the hook too, just because. I think it imparts more of a swimming suggestion. But I may think too much.

You can add a wire rib if you want, but I like to keep steps and materials to a minimum.

When I tie in the bead chain eyes, I first take a couple holding wraps, then slather on some head cement, then finish with X-wraps, trapping in the cement and giving an extra measure of stability to the eyes. There is usually enough cement oozing out from the front to cement the whip finish when the fly is done. What could be simpler?
