Rangitaiki Rubberlegs
Tied by Jason Snyder
  • Thread: 3/0 brown
  • Wingcase: Brown swiss straw
  • Ribbing: Fine copper wire
  • Tail/Legs: Medium brown rubberlegs (square or round, doesn't matter)
  • Hook: Mustad 79850 #2-8
  • Abdomen: Two strands twisted burlap
  • Thorax: Two strands twisted burlap/li>
  • Tying Instructions
Here are the tying instructions for the Tangitaiki Rubberlegs (I modified this slightly from the original Jack Dennis version).

    • Wrap thread to hook bend and tie in rubberlegs to make forked tail.
    • Tie in two strands burlap. It works best to tie them in near the eye of the hook and wrap back to the bend to avoid any lumps in the body.
    • Tie in copper wire for ribbing.
    • Twist the strands of burlap together (tightly) and wrap the abdomen. Tie off burlap but do not cut. Wrap copper wire forward, tie off and trim.
    • Tie in rubberlegs on each side of the body and make several wraps to space the legs apart.
    • Tie in swiss straw for wingcase.
    • Twist burlap strands again and wrap forward, forming thorax. Tie off and trim.
    • Pull swiss straw over thorax, tie off, trim and whip finish head.

The original recipe uses dark stonefly dubbing. I use burlap because its cheaper and easier. A black marker can be used to color the strands for darker patterns. Also, for patterns that I fish I rarely rib the abdomen, I just did it here for looks!
