Head: Bunched deer hair
Abdomen: Electric blue Antron dubbing
Rib: Furnace hackle

| Tying Instructions |
This pattern is tied just like the venerable Elk Hair Caddis.
Start from eye and wrap floss down to the end of the shank and tie in furnace hackle.
Next sparsely dub electric blue antron up to the eye and tie a half hitch. Then palmer the hackle forward and tie off at eye.
Stack a decent amount of the Neon Yellow dyed Deer Hair (a little more than you would if tying an EHC...the dyed deer hair seems to be less dense than elk)
and tie on top of shank near the eye. Pull the hair ends straight up (perpendicular to the hook shank) and wrap a few turns of floss in front of Deer hair. This should cause the ends to stand straight up. Now choose 2 of these ends on either side of the eye and gently tug forward to form 2 antennae.
Lastly, cut remaining ends off straight across, to form a nice head. |
| Fishing Tips |
This fly originated as a 'gag' gift to some fellow UCLA alumni flyfishers. For those that don't know, UCLA's school colors are Light Blue and Gold.
Once, while fishing a local wild trout stream at dusk (YES there are local wild trout here in Southern California!!), I found I could no longer see my griffith's gnat. Not wanting to call it a night, I tied on a Bruin Caddis, and low and behold - a strike!
I tend to fish this pattern whenever I need something easier to see (translation: Evening to night) It probably works better in the dark 'cause the colors get muted and the fish don't get scared by this fly's fine coloration!! |
