Dark Deer Hair Caddis
Tied by Bob Skehan
  • Thread: Brown 8/0
  • Hackle: Brown hackle, tied full, and clipped on bottom even with bottom of hook shank
  • Wing: Dark deer hair
  • Hook: Standard dry fly, size 12
  • Body: Synthetic dubbing, natural hare's ear color
  • Fishing Tips
I came up with this pattern to fish the Alder Fly hatch on the Kennebec River near my home. This hatch is one of those prolific ones which we all dream about, and bring very large brown trout and rainbows to the surface to feed. I've also used it with success in caddis hatches on a number of other Maine rivers, including the West Branch of the Penobscot. When I first fished this pattern, I didn't clip the bottom of the hackle, but found it much more productive with it clipped, and the body of the fly riding in the film.

The brown hackle came from a light blue dun Hoffman saddle which I bought a few years ago, and dyed a portion brown.
