| Tying Instructions |
| Start by Tying in a 4 inch peice or ribbing behind theeye of the hook. Holding the wire past the bend of the hook wind the thread toward the rear securing the wire to the hook. Dub the body maybe 2 or 3 times the thickness of the shank of the hook. stop the body approximately 1/8 inch behind the eye. Tie in the hackle, butt first, pointing towards the rear of the hook. Plamer (wind in evenly spaced wraps) the hackle towards the bend of the hook. Holding the hackle with some pressure, secure it with several turns of the wire. Thn wind the wire towards the eye with 6 or 8 wraps. The wire should be wound in the opposite direction that the hackle was palmered. This will cross the hackle and provide a more durable fly. Secure the wire with thraed and trim. Next, select a small bunch of elk hair, maybe the diameter of a small match stick. Remove the downy fuzz from the bunch and stack in a hair stacker to align tips, Measure the wing on the top of the hook so that the tips extend slightly past the bend of the hook. Trim the butt end above the eye. Holding the wing in your left hand, pass the thread through 1/2 of the bunch andaround the shank (approx. 1/16 inch from the butt end) then take the thread over the rest ofthe bunch and around the shank. These should be snug but not tight wraps. Then befor releasing the wing place 4 or 5 more tight wraps around the wing to flare the top hairs. Tie off and cement the wraps. For a lighter wieght fly I have used gold Krystal flash. |
