Black Elk Hair Caddis
Originator: Al Troth
Tied by Harmen Boshuis
  • Hackle: Black
  • Thread: Black 6/0
  • Abdomen: Black dubbing
  • Wing: Bleached elk hair
  • Head: Butts from wing
  • Hook: Mustad 94840 size 14
  • Rib: Optional gold wire
  • Tying Instructions
    • Tie in body material and then hackle (I use Benecchi dubbing thread) at hook bend.
    • Thread to be at hook eye after tying these in.
    • Wrap body with first wrap behind the hackle.
    • Palmer hackle (4 wraps) over the back 3/4 of the hook.
    • Stack and tie in the wing. Use 5-6 thread wraps over the wing and 4-5 wraps under the wing to keep the eye clear.
    • Use enough elk hair to make a wing that covers the top and sides of the hook; with the majority of the wing on top.
    • Trim wing to form head.
    • To tie off, use 2 thread wraps on a half hitch tool, repeat this.
    • Apply head cement to thread (over and under the wing).
    • A rib is optional and is only required if using loose dubbing.
    Fishing Tips
No floatant is required for this fly.(without rib)and using a long light tippet. Fish with slow stop and go retreive. Very easy fly to see on the water.
